Assistant Professor of Classics
Barbara Olsen has been teaching at Vassar since 2002. She received her B.A. from Cornell University and, in 2004, received her PHD from Duke University.

Barbara Olsen specializes in Greek archaeology and history and frequently teaches classes in Greek, Latin, Greek history, and both Greek and Roman Archaeology. Her research focuses on women's economics in Bronze Age Greece, and she is currently at work on an article exploring the relationship of mother-child imagery in Bronze Age Greece and Cyprus and a second comparing the roles of palace women in the Linear B evidence with those of the women of the Homeric epics. She has published on kourortrophoi (mother-child figurines) from Crete and mainland Greece from 1500-1200 BCE and has excavated at several sites in the Aegean.
