Rachel Kitzinger received her training as a classicist at Swarthmore College, Stanford University and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Currently a professor on the Matthew Vassar, Jr. Chair and Department Chair, she specializes in Greek tragedy, and particularly the plays of Sophocles. She is particularly interested in these texts as dramatic experiences designed to inspire audiences with a powerful combination of emotional and intellectual challenges. In pursuing this interest, she has been involved in productions of Greek tragedy, in the translation of the Greek text into an English script that can be used on the modern stage, and in the recreation of the sound of the original Greek text, using the restored pronunciation of Greek. She is also committed to team-teaching with other members of the faculty who approach ancient texts from different perspectives and to instilling in students a love of both Greek and Latin poetry.
